Cleveland Indians take on New York Yankees in ALDS

Wednesday, 04 Oct, 2017

When Joe plays well, the team plays well. Glen Perkins, who has missed all season with an injury in his throwing arm, and Joe Mauer being the only two players that played on the 2010 team who are now on the 2017 team. Additionally, the two companies will give a few lucky fans the chance to experience the World Series in-person. That's discouraging for Twins fans on one hand.

There are seven former UVa baseball players on major league baseball teams this year set to play in the postseason. Jose Ramirez posted 186 hits, 107 runs, 29 homers and 83 RBI in the regular season, while Francisco Lindor was second on the team with 178 hits, 99 runs, 33 homers and 89 RBI. The Red Sox might take a game from the Astros, but Houston wins in four.

Rooting for the Red Sox is nearly as bad as rooting for the Yankees. The franchise that was ever so close to a World Series title in 2016, are back once again for round two. The Yanks were only two behind the Boston Red Sox in the final AL East standings.

But as we see often in Octobers past, the team left standing at the end of the postseason is not always the best team in the regular season.

In my opinion, this matchup previews to be the most exciting series of the Postseason.

Now, to this year's postseason: The American League should enjoy a big advantage in the World Series. The Indians are the product of a dynamic marriage of potent offense and dominating pitching.

The Chicago Cubs won the NL Central with a 92-70 record this season.

Their uniforms may not be easy on the eyes, but there's a lot to like about this Diamondbacks' roster. The fact that two of them won 90 while two others lost 90 is a testament to the craziness of any given baseball season. The sponsorship, which lasts through the postseason, includes six-second ads on Fox' broadcasts during the Fall Classic, along with traditional ad inventory on Fox, a presence on MLB Network and MLB-controlled digital and social media.

After getting over the hump and winning their first division in 2012, the Nats have been among baseball's perennial contenders. Bryce Harper just returned over the weekend and ex-Tiger Max Scherzer (hamstring) is banged up. Then there's his supporting cast in Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez.

Or just go watch the Pens game. It would be hard to find anyone who believes that the Twins can win 12 games and get a parade this year. For example, the Texas Rangers had a run differential past year of just +8 but secured the top seed in the AL. Teams with higher run differentials should be winning more games, whereas teams with negative run differentials should be below.500. The Dodgers did lose Friday night, so there is still hope. The Dodgers had the sixth-best odds. Like the 2015 Royals, the Indians return to October as a better, battle-hardened team. Followed by the Dodgers, Astros and Cubs. Not to mention the emotional factor after Hurricane Harvey.

The Indians are desperate for a World Series win, as they have been without one since 1948.

The Arizona Diamondbacks (+1400), conversely, won the season series against the NL West rival Dodgers and might have the starting pitching and slugging prowess to take them out in a best-of-five NLDS. I don't see the Rockies doing much damage because of the inexperience in their starting rotation.

The Indians rotation went 81-38 with an AL-leading 3.52 ERA during the season.

The Yankees went on to a memorable American League Championship Series, blowing a three-games-to-none lead against the Red Sox.

The Indians led the AL in bullpen ERA at 2.89.

Fivethirtyeight.com also favors the Indians and Dodgers to reach the Series with Cleveland ending its 69-year drought. It's time for the Indians to do the same with their 68-year dry spell.
