The Tehama County Sheriff's Office is now calling on the Department of Justice to investigate the shooting. No children were among those killed in the attack, which only ended when law enforcement officers, responding to the carnage, fatally shot the gunman.

"The shooter took his vehicle and rammed their fence and gate and entered the grounds on foot with a semi-automatic rifle", he added.

A gunman's rampage has claimed the lives of four people, during a school shooting in California.

A school employee ran out and yelled for the children to get inside the classrooms because someone was shooting at the school, Ferreira said.

An exact number of injured victims isn't known at this time, but police in California have confirmed that a number of students have been transported to hospital.

But police said Tuesday's incident spanned multiple shooting scenes involving multiple victims, and that three deaths, including the shooter, stemmed from the shootings.

The nearby Rancho Tehama Airport was placed on lockdown. Brian Flint said that his neighbor, whom he knows only as Kevin, also stole his truck. Flint said the neighbor had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines. "We made it aware that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us".

The elementary school is located on the outskirts of Corning, an olive oil-producing town of around 8,000 people about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the state capital Sacramento. "They went around the community shooting at the schools!"

Gov. Jerry brown issued a statement on the shooting, saying: "Anne and I are saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief".
