How soon is too soon to celebrate the holidays?
The Case for "Yes, Let's Put Those Christmas Carols On".
Thanksgiving is one of those holidays some people don't feel like they need to celebrate. Throwing a party is an easy way to jump into the holidays. You know what that means. "And the answer is always no". Whether you're on or off campus, you can easily host a Thanksgiving-themed potluck for your friends and settle down to watch a movie or play some board games while you digest. More importantly, when should people start listening to Christmas music? As someone who deals with this very issue, I know how hard it can be to experience the emotional distress that comes with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, or any other annual celebration during the winter season, so I hope to provide some helpful suggestions for getting through the Holidays.
The holiday season is a time where people can show off their decorating skills by creating handsome images with holiday lights. There's little to no exclusive Thanksgiving music, no tradition of gift-giving and it certainly isn't a cross-cultural holiday.
Friendsgiving - Spending Thanksgiving with your friends can be a great way to avoid the stress of familial gatherings while still enjoying the communal celebration of the holiday. Most holiday festivals offer food, warm drinks, and many other holiday activities that will get you in the mood for some festive fun.
"I'm not a big fan of Thanksgiving because of the fact that it was essentially built on the oppression and harm of the indigenous people", Maniglia (senior-public relations) said.
It started looking a lot like Christmas a couple of weeks ago with crews putting up holiday decor around the Houston area, but some people think it's too early since Thanksgiving hasn't even happened yet. But no matter what you do, the holidays are a time to enjoy and surround yourself with people that you love. We haven't even defrosted our Thanksgiving turkeys or seen a snowfall yet!
The "Christmas spirit" today has expanded to include a whole range of non-religious traditions that are considered equally as important to the cheer as the story of Jesus' birth - so it might be better to call it the holiday season.
For others, many can blame it on the culture that surrounds us.
For many of us, going home for Thanksgiving either brings excitement or anxiety. And who doesn't like to get presents? "So, I think they're more excited about the holiday in which they get presents as opposed to the holiday in which they don't [Thanksgiving]". Depending on which holiday you want to decorate for, you can plan how insane you want your decorations to be. I challenge everyone to make a conscious effort on November 23 to take a few minutes to think about what you're truly grateful for.
