Miami at No. 2 in AP poll

Wednesday, 15 Nov, 2017

In the four seasons before the Hurricanes entered the ACC in 2004, they went 46-4, won a national championship, almost won another, were ranked as high as No. 2 in the country each season and never finished lower than fifth.

And now, The U is back.

The bruising, battering Canes (9-0, 6-0 ACC) made the Fighting Irish (8-2) look like pacifists, eliciting chants of "Over-rated" and "It's Great to be a Miami Hurricane" by the fourth quarter and probably making old-timers think they were witnessing the 2001 Canes. Nationally, it scored a 2.1, to finish well behind the day's other big games. Miami and Notre Dame are both schools with big TV fanbases, and the endless hype for the return of the "Catholics versus Convicts" rivalry with a lot on the line certainly didn't hurt in terms of drawing a neutral audience (although the blowout score may have meant the audience didn't stick around all game). It harks back not only to past defensive Hurricanes standouts like Sapp, Reed and Sean Taylor, but to Miami's culture of unsubtle audacity. "But at the end of the day, we're going to make you respect us".

Miami, led by another impressive performance by quarterback Malik Rosier, 146 rushing yards by Travis Homer and a suffocating defense that held the Irish to 261 yards, is now one of only three undefeated Power 5 programs after No. 1 Georgia was crushed by Auburn, and could rise into the top three of the CFP rankings.

Oklahoma moved up to two spots to No. 3, jumping Clemson, which remained No. 4.

Coach Mark Richt is now 18-4 in his first 22 games with the Hurricanes. Beating North Carolina just gives you a sense of false confidence until a defensive lineman chases your star runner down before he even gains a yard.

There is one alma mater whose name is always announced by its alumni with the same words and in the same way, in a businesslike tone mixing seriousness and pride, and with no room for doubt about which team they are referring to. "We've just got to be better in our execution. I never would have predicted what happened, but it happened, and I'm thankful for it". Wimbush added only 24 yards on the ground. Kelly said he thinks Wimbush, who finished 10 of 21 passing for 119 yards and one TD, will mentally respond.

There were at least 12 National Football League teams with scouts at the game, and five bowls also sent representatives. "It was a game-changing moment".

In limited action against Wake Forest and Miami, Williams had 56 yards on six carries. He led all Hurricanes with eight tackles and had his third interception of the season early in the game.

Dallas followed with another touchdown, this one a 5-yarder, with four minutes left in the game.

Corso said he also was going with Tigers over the Bulldogs.

"Credit to them all over the place, " senior Irish linebacker Drue Tranquill said.

Miami went 0-4 against Florida State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Notre Dame a year ago. "That was the loudest game I've ever played in".
