At least two people were killed and about 70 injured early Sunday when an Amtrak passenger train and a CSX Corp. freight train collided outside Columbia, S.C. Both Cella and Michael Kempf were in the first vehicle of the train at the time of the wreck, said Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. "You could clearly tell the train was coming off the track".

Pettaway was discharged from a hospital with minor whiplash, he said.

"Any time you have anything that happens like that, you expect more fatalities".

Two deaths were confirmed by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

Several injured passengers were seen walking along the tracks after being evacuated, according to reports on social media. One described the wreck, injuries and chaos.

"I hereby just want to stress that it is merely a normal individual case of trade remedy investigation", foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regularly scheduled news briefing. "Sounded like somebody shredding aluminum cans".

Positive train control relies on Global Positioning System, wireless radio and computers to monitor train positions and automatically slow or stop trains that are in danger of colliding, derailing from excessive speed, or about to enter track where crews are working or that is otherwise off limits.

Sumwalt said the accident could have been avoided if a federal safety system, under consideration for years, had been in place. "That's what it's created to do", said National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt.

"Business as usual must end", Democratic Sen. He admits the train was running behind schedule, but said the train was not speeding because they were late. There were 8 crew members and approximately 139 passengers, with injuries reported.

A freight train passing through went barreling down the side track and slammed into the parked train, killing nine people, majority millworkers choked by chorine gas that leaked from a damaged tanker vehicle.

"For whatever reason, that switch was, as they say in the railroad industry, lined and locked", Sumwalt said.

The system that operates the train signals in the area was down, so CSX dispatchers were operating them manually.

He also said at times Michael would be awake for 24 hours straight, overworked and stressed out.

Amtrak Train 91, operating between NY and Miami, came in contact with a CSX freight train at around 2:35a.m. ET in Cayce, South Carolina. Investigators looking into the crash are focusing on the actions of the driver of a truck, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN. "Theoretically, an operative PTC system would include switches in addition to signals, so it would cover both speed and switches", Anderson said.

He said Amtrak staff evacuated passengers in a "really calm fashion" and added: "It's all very calm here".

Numerous passengers were asleep when the crash jolted them awake and forced them into the cold.

Amtrak officials have not yet said if this crash will cause any delays or cancellations in North Carolina. So I run to the back, try to get to the bathroom.

Larkin says other passengers were bleeding and that his right knee throbbed.

TV footage from the scene showed the aftermath of the crash, with the Amtrak engine on its side and its front crumpled. One vehicle in the middle of the Amtrak train was snapped in half, forming a V off to one side of the tracks.

On Dec. 18, an Amtrak train ran off the rails along a curve during its inaugural run on a route south of Tacoma, Wash., killing three people and injuring dozens.

In December, three people were killed when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Washington state.
