"On Wednesday morning, a Grade 7 student from Westminster Woods PS passed away", said a letter to parents - obtained by CBC News, dated January 31.

The season had been dominated by "A" strains, which are thought to cause more severe illness.

"Overall hospitalizations are now significantly higher than what we've seen for this time of year since our current tracking system began nearly a decade ago, in 2010", Schuchat said.

"There is a lot of fear and alarm about this flu season", Schuchat said. Mercer said the past week alone has brought the highest number of cases for the area this year so far.

"The flu is more than just 'a bad cold.' It's a serious respiratory illness that's easily spread from person to person, usually when the person with the flu coughs or sneezes", Dr. It is one of the most aggressive flu seasons of the last decade.

No pediatric deaths have been reported in Iowa this season, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported 63 deaths of those 17 years old and younger nationwide this year. According to the latest national assessment, influenza activity remains at peak levels.

Since the 1997-98 season, when flu data collection began, the only higher rate ever measured in a single week was during the 2009 swine flu pandemic when the proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness peaked at 7.71 percent. That ties the highest level seen in the US during swine flu in 2009.

"This is not the time to be lackadaisical about flu vaccinations and flu preventive measures", said Christine Schuyler, County director of Health and Human Services.

"It's not uncommon for B strains to increase later in the season", Schuchat said. Amely Baez, from the Elmhurst section of Queens, was rushed to the hospital, where she died at about 6:30 a.m. Monday.

"We were hoping to have better news..." Schuchat said there is no indication that the strain has mutated in some way to make it worse than usual, but scientists are looking to make sure there isn't something unusual about it.

"Unfortunately, flu can spread rapidly in communal settings like classrooms and nursing homes, but no one is immune from the flu", Box said in the release. Albertson said she got a flu shot, Jossi did not.

This year's flu season has now reached a level that we haven't seen since the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and we haven't yet reached the peak.

There is some good news. In the meantime, Schuchat said people should call multiple pharmacies to find it. Veda Albertson, a 70-year-old retiree in Tampa, was sick for three weeks with high fever and fluid in her lungs.
