When Ashwin was appointed as captain, Sehwag had said that he always wanted a bowler to be a captain.
Ashwin has captained his state side Tamil Nadu in the past (leading them to Vijay Hazare triumph in 2009) but it will be the first time he will lead a side in the shortest format.
Virender Sehwag, the team's mentor, meanwhile insisted that, contrary to perceptions, it was a bowler's game in T20s and having a bowler as captain would help the team.
"We have spent so much money on the players this year, I hope it bears fruit". It was a different experience. "I believe Finch is such a player that he can play anywhere".
Ashwin knows he has a hard job in hand.
He, however, has been a part of the IPL winning team twice in the past, and this season, he will be hungrier than ever to add a third title to the list.
"I will go about my job and the spectators can decide whether there is any similarity".
"The kind of team we have this year, we can win the championship". But I think it is also a responsibility.
"In T20 cricket, every bowler goes for runs, irrespective of their quality. Learning from them and taking advice is something which I will never be adverse to", Ashwin said on the sidelines of King XI Punjab's jersey launch on Tuesday. Both Sehwag and Yuvraj had been my captains.
In 2018, the Shers of Punjab will look to make the best out of the experienced side that they have managed to put up at the auctions. Yuvraj, Aaron Finch, David Miller and Chris Gayle are among the high-profile players in the side this season. I am also one of them. "I think that we have so far the best team and that is why we feel that we could win this edition", Sehwag told reporters here.
When it was pointed out to him that there could be shortage of good wicket-keepers in the Punjab squad apart from KL Rahul, Ashwin laughed and said every franchise in the IPL has some shortcoming or the other, which should be not be taken too seriously.
"Moreover, in T20 cricket, there are only 20 overs and wicket-keepers sometimes don't gather more than six balls", said the KXIP skipper with a laugh. The team finished fifth previous year, winning seven out of their 14 matches, but couldn't qualify for the knockouts.
