Republican candidate calls Parkland survivor Emma González a "skinhead lesbian"

According to the Associated Press, Leslie Gibson, the only declared House candidate for Maine's 57th District, has shut down his personal Twitter account and has made his candidacy account private after he tweeted that 18-year-old Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma González is a "skinhead lesbian", and that student David Hogg is a "bald faced liar".

Maine House candidate Leslie Gibson of Sabattus called Gonzalez a "skinhead lesbian" on Twitter.

Gibson also attacked Gonzalez's classmate David Hogg, whom he called "a bald faced liar" for saying that the National Rifle Association "owned" Republican lawmakers.

"Dana Loesch 'owns" Congressmen?' Gibson said about Hogg's interview. "Completely absurd", he wrote.

"The more my parents said no, the more I wanted it".

'To me, that oath has no expiration date. However my passion for defending our rights must be tempered with civility, and that did not happen in this instance'.

Pat Fogg, a Democratic organiser in ME, said he hoped an alternative candidate would step up to challenge Gibson for the seat.

Democratic organizer Pat Fogg said she wished she knew someone who could run against Gibson. "That sort of stupidity really turns people off". Independent candidate filing will remain open until June 1.

After intense backlash, the candidate issued an apology on Twitter before deleting his account.

Leslie Gibson, in a Monday Twitter post, called Emma Gonzalez a "skinhead lesbian" and said she does not deserve to be mentioned among the survivors of the Stoneham Douglas High School shooting on February 14 because she "was in a completely different part of the school" while shooter Nikolas Cruz went on a rampage that killed 14 students and three staff members.

Gibson also acknowledged that she was doing work that she values and that he would extend his hand to her "in friendship and understanding", the Portland Press Herald reported. He said that referring to her a survivor was a misnomer.

Hogg has also been incredibly vocal since the Valentine's Day tragedy, and has repeatedly called out NRA members both in person and on Twitter.

'What matters is that my friends are dead, along with hundreds upon hundreds of others all over the United States'.

Just after the massacre he was one of a few accused of being a crisis actor and not a real student survivor.
