Harley Quinn spin-off film starring Margot Robbie eyes director

Warner Bros. has set Cathy Yan to direct the next film to feature Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Give another high five to Warner Bros and DC.

There are a lot of Harley Quinn-centric films in development, as Robbie herself has said.

Yan would be the second female filmmaker to join the DC universe with this film, which is still known as the Untitled Girl Gang Movie at Warner Bros. She made her feature film debut with this year's Dead Pigs, which screened at Sundance and won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Acting at the 2018 festival.

DC Comics' Birds of Prey are an worldwide crimefighting team featuring heroines such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). Yan was competing with several more prominent male directors for the job, but impressed DC with an "exceptional" presentation of her take on the project.

Robbie's LuckyChap is producing with Sue Kroll and her Kroll & Co Entertainment, along with Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the DC slate as we learn it. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote the "Transformers" spinoff "Bumblebee" and was hired to replace Joss Whedon in penning the "Batgirl" movie. In addition to this film, a sequel to Suicide Squad is in the works with Gavin O'Connor directing. Two others, Harley Quinn Vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer, seem further in the distance.

Much like Jenkins, Yan has only one indie movie on her resume.
