BSNL rolls out Rs 118 prepaid plan to take on Reliance Jio

Thursday, 17 May, 2018

Since the launch of Reliance Jio in September 2016, the telecom sector in the country has undergone a major disruption. The validity of this plan is for 28 days. On the lucrative front, BSNL is providing users access to a free PRBT tune. State-owned telecom operators do not have the freedom like the private ones to continue using cheap data plans, however, BSNL has prepped up to mark it's presence with a list of offers. Apart from this, the BSNL signature caller tune will automatically get activated for free post recharge of the pack. However, BSNL's offer can be compared with RJio's Rs 98 pack which gives 2GB data in 4G network for a period of 28 days. The plan also offers 300 local and national SMS, and complimentary subscription to Jio suite of apps. However, if a user want to opt other ringtone, they will have to pay a nominal fee.

The BSNL Rs. 118 recharge pack is available in several circles including Chennai, Kolkata, and more.

In a bid to take on the cutthroat competition from Jio, Idea, and Airtel had announced their recharge plans with similar offers and prices alike. But the bigger question is how well BSNL's new plan competes against the offers from Reliance Jio and Airtel. The BSNL Rs 187 plan offers unlimited voice calls (both STD and local) along with 100 free SMS per day.

BSNL's offer also comes with limitations in select circles, and it only offers half the amount of data that Jio does at Rs 20 lesser price. Moreover, BSNL did not mention any FUP limit per day, so we can say that the voice calling is unlimited like the other BSNL prepaid plans. Airtel's free unlimited plan with 128 kbps starts at Rs. 199. For someone wanting both voice and data benefits, BSNL has a plan worth Rs 187 that is meant for subscribers looking for an economical monthly mobile plan.
