Ripley County Relay for Life starts Saturday

Sunday, 10 Jun, 2018

This is the 16th year that Windsor-Essex has participated in the national event.

"This is something that amazes me year after year to see how powerful this event is", Procaccini said.

Since the first Canadian Relay for Life in 1999, the event has raised over $500 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The event kicks off tonight at R.L. Maddox Field at 7 and runs through 3 a.m. "We're calling it "Cafeteria For the Cure" and Olive Garden will cater the dinner", Kofoid noted.

"Relay for Life is kind of the signature event for the America Cancer Society".

"If you are a cancer survivor, even if you have not registered yet, please join us", said a news release from the event organizers. Relay teams will set up their camps in the MHS gym and down the adjacent hallways.

During opening ceremonies, emcee Rick Zimmerman welcomed Lola McMurter to the stage.

Silipigni isn't a cancer survivor. Some, like Braga had beat breast cancer, for others it had been Lymphoma, the list went on.

"People will say to me, I don't know how you keep fighting?"

Kofoid noted that people who purchase bags may also send pictures. "If we get them soon enough, we can put the picture with the name in the display", she added. What started out as one event has greatly expanded and has been an annual event here in Minot for over 20 years. Last year, she raised over $5,000.

"It's free to the public and we would like to get everyone involved", said Minot Relay for Life member Heidi Llewellyn. "It was supposed to go an hour and it went nearly double that - luckily we had enough desserts".

Over 300 individuals teamed up and were taking turns walking during the 12-hour relay from 7 p.m Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. Thanks to a donation from Starved Rock Wood Products, the team is holding a kitchen cabinet raffle. "It's an honour to be the face of Relay and I'm happy to help others". You can help them reach this goal by donating here. "They will go anywhere the victor is located, even out of state". This year's relay theme is "Light the Night", so teams are encouraged to decorate their team sites with creative lighting elements to reflect that illuminating theme. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Relay on July 14.

Relay for Life teams came out strong on Friday night, decorating the turf with illuminated paper bags and torches to remember their loved ones. A special vehicle show will be held at the fairgrounds at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The race will take place rain or shine.

Relay For Life also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer, Lockett said.

"I think my first feeling was that I couldn't believe it", Braga said. She also works in palliative medicine.

When she received her own diagnosis of breast cancer on June 17, 2017 she felt detached, she said.
