Memorable Moments From the 2018 Tony Awards

Luckily, Springsteen returned to the show later to perform a piece from his show that Robert De Niro (aptly!) dubbed "Jersey Boy".

Metcalf's award marked the second consecutive Tony for the actress, who a year ago won for best lead actress in a play for her performance in "A Doll's House, Part 2".

Who's Hosting?: Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles have been named this year's emcees. At age 82, Jackson has returned to Broadway for the first time in more than three decades after a lengthy detour into British politics.

Among those tapped as Tony Awards presenters are Oscar victor Robert DeNiro, Grammy champ Billy Joel and Kennedy Center honoree Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Lane, who won for best featured actor in a play, said "Angels" still speaks to society in the midst of "political insanity".

Biggest Missed Opportunity: Tony Shalhoub won for his performance in The Band's Visit, but not for Best Mustache on Broadway. "Mean Girls" won nothing and "SpongeBob SquarePants" got only one for best set design. However, "Carousel" choreographer Justin Peck won the Tony, and cast member Lindsay Mendez won the the Tony for best supporting actress. The show went on to win best musical revival, beating "My Fair Lady" and "Carousel".

A teacher from one of those schools, Melody Herzfeld of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, was given special recognition for her courage during the February shootings, as were the students who make up her drama department and who took the stage to sing "Seasons of Love" from "Rent", clearly moving the hardened professionals watching.

Past Tony champs slated to return to the stage to name new winners include John Leguizamo, Patti LuPone, Kelli O'Hara, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Marissa Jaret Winokur. She explained that she had been told to change her last name "from Mendez to Matthews" or risk not being hired, but held fast and earned a Tony Award to prove them wrong. To all artists out there, she said: "Just be your true self and the world will take note". Both the network and award organizers will anxiously await the ratings for the broadcast.
