President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, June 11, 2018, in Singapore.

Trump also reaffirmed the tight US-Singapore relations by reassuring PM Lee that he was "his friend".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Mr. Trump and the entire USA team was looking forward to Tuesday's summit.

Kim arrived in Singapore mid-afternoon Sunday, amid much speculation about the outcome of Tuesday's talks.

As Trump was trying to make "fool trade" happen, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted a series of photos showing State Department officials meeting with foreign diplomats and generally behaving like normal White House officials headed into a high-stakes summit.

There's wild speculation about how Kim will perform on the world stage, although one question was answered Sunday: His grim-faced, well-muscled bodyguards marched alongside his armored limousine at one point in Singapore, just as they did when he met the South Korean leader in April.

Concrete barricades have been erected outside St Regis Singapore hotel which is within the zoned security area. He released a photograph from inside the room of North Korean vice foreign minister Choi Sun-hee smiling across the table at the USA lead negotiator, the Philippines ambassador Sung Kim.

While the main attraction of the summit will inevitably be the historic meeting between Trump and Kim, that wasn't the first world leader he met with on this trip. United States officials were quoted as saying that the two leaders could spend the first two hours alone with translators but not advisors.

During his preparation period, Trump continued on Monday to publicly brawl on Twitter with U.S. allies over trade.

"A successful summit might also open the door to some confidence-building measures, such as the opening of a US diplomatic office in North Korea and vice versa, or the resumption of USA missions to recover the remains of Korean War service members killed in North Korea", Wertz said.

Singapore is one of the few countries that have diplomatic relations with both the USA and North Korea.

Nobody is pretending North Korea can ape Singapore but the message to Kim of the hermit kingdom is clear - come in from the cold on the steaming hot humid south Asian island of Singapore.

The top USA and North Korean negotiators had earlier emerged from a last-ditch meeting at the Ritz Carlton with pursed lips, and no sign of whether an attempt to narrow the gap between USA and North Korean expectations of what denuclearisation should look like, had worked.

It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests a year ago raised serious fears of war.

Trump acknowledged the difficulty of gleaning much information concerning Kim, who has scant experience on the worldwide stage and about whom foreign intelligence agencies have struggled to gather much beyond basic biographical data. The president wants the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of his nuclear weapons program. She led a North Korean delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

"I am on a mission of peace and we're going to be carrying the hearts of millions of people from all", he said.

"Rather than using a public restroom, the leader of North Korea has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels", Lee Yun-keol, a former member of a North Korean Guard Command unit who defected, told The Washington Post.
