JUST IN: Real Madrid appoint new coach, Julen Lopetegui

Tuesday, 12 Jun, 2018

Lopetegui is a big fan of De Gea and will likely start the 27-year-old in all of Spain's games in Russian Federation this summer.

But regardless of his success at the World Cup, which begins on Thursday (Friday NZT), the 51-year-old is guaranteed one of the most sought after jobs in club football, after signing a three-year contract with Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have finally found a new coach to replace Zinedine Zidane.

"My future? The important thing is the World Cup and not to think of anything else that can divert you or upset you", De Gea, who is on national team duties with Spain told reporters. And as they had hoped, the European champions have announced the Frenchman's successor ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The Spanish giants announced that the current Spanish national team boss Julen Lopetegui will take up the role at the Bernabeu after his commitment with them ends after this summer's World Cup in 2018.

The official announcement from Real Madrid that Julen Lopetegui will be their new coach has caught the Spanish FA off guard as well as the majority of the squad in Krasnodar.

Lopetegui succeeded Vicente del Bosque, who had overseen Spain's triumphs at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, but had also been in charge for the disappointing group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Lopetegui was appointed Spain coach in 2016.

The appointment of Lopetegui could lead to a thawing in the relationship between Ronaldo and Real Madrid who are now refusing to give the 33-year-old the new contract he wants.

He managed Spain at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level before moving to Porto.

Spain are the only team in Russian Federation who have remained undefeated from Euro 2016 to the World Cup.

Real finished third in La Liga last season, 17 points behind champions Barcelona.
