De Gea demands public apology from Spanish PM

Wednesday, 13 Jun, 2018

The Spaniard has established himself as the best goalkeeper in world football and has been courted by Real Madrid for the last four summers.

De Gea himself though, has insisted that he wants to forget about the club game for a few weeks and focus exclusively on Russian Federation. "The most important thing right now is the World Cup, I can not think of anything else or get distracted".

'You have to be focused on having a good World Cup - we are all good. Our qualifying campaign was nearly flawless and our idea is to carry that through in the finals, with a little luck and the team we've got, hopefully we can go far.

"Football is football and a thousand things can happen".

'But I'm always calm. People have criticized me knowing that it wasn't right and nor have they come out to recognize they were in the wrong, or rectify what they said. But I am always relaxed, whatever crops up, I'll always be the same and I want to be 100% focused on the World Cup.

De Gea's focus was hampered during Spain's last appearance at a major global tournament when his name became linked with a sexual assault case in the build-up to Euro 2016. At the time Sanchez said he did not "feel comfortable with De Gea as the national team's goalkeeper".

In seven years at Old Trafford, De Gea has become a firm fans' favorite and one of Jose Mourinho's most important players, but he would not be drawn on his future at the club.

"I politely accepted his apology", De Gea told Diario AS as he prepared for Spain's 2018 World Cup campaign in Russian Federation. "The thing is that what he said back then was in public and for that I think that his apology should also come in public", he said.

But it's also true that most of the well-known figures who showed a lack of respect towards me haven't apologized at all - not even in private. "It is easy to talk about others in this country".

"In the end, things are proven and we saw that it was all a lie".

'We are very excited, there is a good team, a good group. It's all water under the bridge now.

De Gea said his full focus was now on the World Cup.
