He only grew the nails on his left hand, keeping his right hand trimmed.

Chillal, 82, recently retired his fingernails to Ripley's after growing them for 66 years. Image sourceAccording to estimations, the combined length of Chillal's nails was a whopping 909.6 centimeters.

Shridhar Chillal's extraordinarily long nails have now gone on display at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in NY.

The Guinness World Record holder for the longest fingernails ever on a single hand has had his claws cut after 66 years. The Guinness World Record holder is now finally said goodbye to his nails in an emotional farewell.

Well, Shridhar. I hope you absolutely make the most of the rest of your life, no longer inhibited by your horrific nail situation.

Adjudicators noted his thumbnail measured an unbelievable 197.8cm and curled into a tight coil at the end.

It's not an easy business growing the world's longest nails. "Chillal dedicated his life to something truly remarkable and Ripley's is the ideal home to honour his legacy". According to Chillal, the teacher warned him about the level of care required to grow out nails and said he would never understand unless he experienced it for himself, reported The Guardian.

Chillal, 82, has not cut the fingernails on his left hand since 1952 and has the longest fingernails in the world.

The weight and length of Chillal's fingernails made him lose function in his left hand.

"But when I realised that after cutting my nails, my nails will be at Ripley's Believe It or Not! and they're going to maintain it very nicely and for a lifetime, then I felt like I was doing the right decision and that's why I chose to cut my nails".

But he chose to cut away an important part of his life earlier this week when he flew to NY to have the nails removed by a doctor.
