There's only one Blockbuster store left in the United States

The management team behind the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska announced on Thursday that the Anchorage and Fairbanks locations would close on Monday.

It temporarily worked, according to Kevin Daymude, general manager of Blockbuster Alaska. The stores will get rid of their videos in a liquidation sale that starts Tuesday.

The Blockbuster stores chugging along up North - including the one that John Oliver's Last Week Tonight donated Russell Crowe-themed movie props to - are closing down. But the stores in Alaska continued to flourish for the past eight years.

The closures will leave the Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the sole holdout. Most of the USA stores closed shop soon after that.

"I go out at 6-7 o'clock in the morning buying the new movies, getting what people want, trying to stay relevant and keep our customers happy", she told CNN.

"We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it's just to say "Hello, '" the final two shops" managers posted in a Facebook announcement on Thursday. "We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years". Now, the last two Blockbusters in Alaska are going away. "I can't thank John Oliver or his show enough". In September 2010 it filed for bankruptcy and has spent the past eight years closing down stores across the world.

The statement says both Vey and Daymude have been with the company since 1991. Not that its legacy was purely benevolent; when Blockbuster came to my town in New Jersey, it systematically put most of the local video stores out of business, and some of them were bigger and had better selections. "I can't tell you how much it means to us". One Blockbuster store in the United States, that is.

Blockbuster formally closed all company-owned stores by January 2014, leaving franchisees to fend for themselves.

At the peak of its success, the once-iconic video rental chain had more than 9,000 stores and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide, Deadline reported.

Texas and Alaska used to be popular locations for Blockbuster because of the poor quality of high-speed internet service and high prices.
